Born and raised on a farm in New South Wales, Bernie moved to Sydney at 18 and met his future wife, Verna, a year later.
The couple shared 68 years of marriage and built a life centred around family, community and adventure.
Known for his sharp mind and love of sport, Bernie has enjoyed dirt bike riding, cycling, tennis, cricket, golf and lawn bowls throughout his life.
He once earned a place on the honour board at Campbelltown Golf Club after scoring a hole-in-one and continued lawn bowls until the age of 101.
Today, Bernie still drives, shops independently, climbs the stairs to his first-floor apartment and regularly helps his 86-year-old daughter, Helen Emerson, by driving her to appointments.
Residents and staff at Alloura Waters describe Bernie as an inspiration and a much-loved member of the community.
