MP RENEWS CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF SHARK NETS
MEMBER for Terrigal Adam Crouch is calling for the NSW Government to commit to a trial removal of shark nets on the Central Coast, ahead of the release of the NSW Government’s 2025-26 Shark Management Program.
The Shark Management Program is one of the largest and comprehensive shark mitigation programs of its size, aimed at enhancing beach safety and minimising shark and human interactions along the NSW coastline.
“With the release of the 2025-26 Shark Management Program due shortly, it is time for the Minns Labor Government to take marine life seriously and commit to the removal of shark nets from the Central Coast.” Mr Crouch said.
“Shark nets are outdated technology from a bygone area, and have time and time again been proven to provide no safety benefit to beachgoers across the state,”
“Thanks to a record $85M investment by the former Liberal-National Government, we have the technology we need to reduce the risk to beachgoers – listening stations, SMART drumlines and monitoring drones.” said Mr Crouch.
Last year it was revealed that more than 130 non-target marine animals had been found dead in shark nets across NSW, with 90 per cent of marine animals caught in shark nets being non-target species such as whales, turtles and dolphins.
“We know that shark nets don’t work. We’ve got the technology to replace them – it’s time for the Minns Labor Government and our local Labor Members, who have been completely silent on this, to step up and remove these outdated killer nets from our waters.” Mr Crouch said.
