COAST MPs CONDEMN NEWS COVERAGE CUTS

NBN slashes services after takeover
CENTRAL Coast MPs have joined together to voice their disappointment at the decision by NBN Television to cut news services to the Central Coast and Hunter regions following a takeover from the WIN Network.

Weekend bulletins are set to be cut and weekday local news halved, limited to just 30 minutes from 5:30pm to 6:00pm.

Local editions of NBN News will be replaced by Nine News at 6:00pm, a move condemned by Central Coast MPs.

NBN News has been a staple in households across the regional NSW for decades and has provided coverage to the issues and stories that matters to the region.

The network has also provided a pathway for local emerging journalists to get their start in the industry.

It is important regional news is supported and that communities like the Central Coast can continue to receive local news from local sources.

The Central Coast MPs look forward to working collaboratively with WIN to reach a positive outcome for the community.
Minister for the Central Coast David Harris said: “Our region is full of great stories and this decision will impact negatively.

“Local news is crucial for communities like ours, NBN has given a voice to our community for decades and by making cuts to the Network

“It will also impact the wonderful young journalists and crew that have supported our Region through celebration and Disasters.

“Our region is growing and is significant in the national story and I urge WIN to reconsider this and ensure that local voice and stories continue be heard.”

Member for The Entrance David Mehan said: “It’s really important that we have our own local news.

“I’m disappointed that Win TV are taking over NBN and have announced such a significant cut back to our local news content.”

Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch said: “Local news is a vital service for our community, giving a voice to local stories and community issues.

“Our community is not just an extension of Sydney. We are a distinct region deserving of a strong local media voice.

“For decades NBN News’ journalists, camera operators and news professionals have done a fantastic job shedding light on vital local stories and this decision fails to acknowledge the demand in our region for locally produced, local stories.

“As a provider claiming to be a ‘voice for regional communities’ I urge WIN to stand true to this mandate and reconsider this terrible decision.”
